The essentials

A useful ownership model makes its inputs visible. Use a shared period and distance, separate recurring costs from one-off costs, and show how uncertain inputs change the result.

ScopeGeneral automotive education. Examples are illustrative; equipment and support must be checked for the exact vehicle and market.

Choose a common scenario

For a classroom-style example, compare two imaginary cars over three years and the same distance. List purchase outlay, energy, insurance, scheduled service and any resale assumption separately. Use one currency and state whether financing is included.

If a quoted energy cost covers a month but a service allowance covers a year, align the time periods before adding them. Keep assumptions about future prices labelled as assumptions. An accurate sum of inconsistent inputs is still an unhelpful comparison.

Make one calculation auditable

Suppose a hypothetical EV travels 10,000 km at a billed-energy allowance of 18 kWh per 100 km. That is 1,800 kWh. At an invented tariff of 0.30 currency units per kWh, the energy line is 540 currency units. This is an arithmetic example, not a measured consumption claim or local electricity quote.

Changing the tariff to 0.45 raises that line to 810. The difference illustrates why the charging scenario belongs beside the vehicle assumption. Session fees or parking would need their own entries.

Keep service and uncertainty visible

The Department of Energy distinguishes the routine maintenance needs of battery-electric vehicles from vehicles retaining combustion engines. Use that as background; obtain the actual schedule and prices for the vehicle being studied.

Show a range of outcomes

Run a second scenario for the largest uncertain input, such as resale value or future energy price. The result should explain which assumptions drive the decision. A model becomes more useful when the reader can change an input and see why the answer moves.
